Our Expedition Ships: Professor Multanovskiy and Akademik Shokalskiy
We travel with the comfortable, ice-strengthened expedition ships Professor Multanovskiy and Akademik Shokalskiy. The ships were built in the 1980’s at the icebreaker shipyard Värtsilä in Finland. Originally designed as research vessels they are specially equipped for the waters in Antarctica. Today they have been refitted to expedition cruise ships, meeting the requirements andneeds of the modern polar tourist. The ships take 48 passengers in comfortable cabins. The triple cabins have shared facilities. There are twin cabins with private and with shared facilities. All cabins have windows. There are two superior cabins and one suite. These are spacious, have private facilities, a bedroom and living room with a sofa and chairs as well as TV/Video and many large windows. Facilities include dining room, bar, polar library, shop and sauna. You are always welcome on the bridge and the spacious observation decks. The ships have a Russian crew of 21-23. There is also a Western staff including the expedition leader, guides/lecturers, chefs, hotel manager, bar tender and medical doctor.
